To be fair, he was angry in his red cap too.

I hate those too. And my love of the navy one is partially about my preference for navy, frankly. Still, there's something that I always liked about it. Indeed, I've kinda always fucking hated the Cardinals at least on a low level, but I've owned two navy Cards hats over the years, the most recent one purchased at Busch in 2018. I've always fucking hated, say, the mets at least on a low level too, but I've never owned a Mets cap.

Disagree. I like both of their caps, actually, and I like the way they apportion them -- red at home, blue away when they play a red (Reds, Phils, Nats, etc.) team, red when they play other teams. Agree with you on the Sunday bird caps, those can go away.

I'm also glad for the blue option for my own wear -- I have red Cards' caps I never wear any more because of the MAGA association with red. But I'm happy to wear the blue one.

More tomorrow but here is one Mets fan who has your back about the black uniforms.

And I am not at all a Seinfeld fan but even I can’t read about the idea of any changes at all to the iconic Yankee pinstripes without thinking of the worst uniform fabric change ever. The joke packs far more of a punch if you know how perfect that uniform is.

I hate that everything about the Mets's image is Yankees Little Brother, right down to the fact that they don't have a recognised look.

"Now, closer so sober, I understand people’s need for nuance." Most subtle and underrated line in today's newsletter. Well done.

Expand full comment

Agree on that line. However, it's a slippery slope...if one isn't careful they might accidentally get all the way to sober.

I don’t think the relationship between the owners and players is in quite as much dire straits as you make it out to be

We’ll find out when the CBA expires.

I guess they are currently so far away from an agreement. Maybe if they acted more like brothers in arms they’d get something done soon.

Good point. It’s the sultans of swing that really bring the fans in

Expand full comment

That would require the owners to see the players as equals. I wish that would happen.

That Forest Citys name and green uniform is perfect and gorgeous… And, sadly, just like everything that perfect and gorgeous, isn’t real and will never happen.

I know you aren’t taking votes, but mine would be for the Nats’ blue alternate tops because a) they’re not red and b) they were the official uniform of the 2019 champs.

Well, if any team is entitled to red/white/blue it’s DC… Always thought that the football team should adopt the same color scheme so all of our pro teams are the same (like Pittsburgh), but as usual nobody’s listening to me.

I used to feel that way but Lil' Danny Snyder has tainted it for me. I'd rather they declare (moral) bankruptcy and move on. [That has as much chance as Forest Citys, though.]

The Forest Citys would join the Toronto Maple Leafs as the only grammatically incorrect names in pro sports. Also the only ones named for plants? I still want Spiders. They can do a black accentthing. I know Craig hates the black, but he's not the boss of me.

The Nats look fine. They can get away with the red/white/blue colour scheme we're sick of on every other team.

I went to vet school at Kansas State, right in the heart of Kansas. One of my years out there, I dated a girl on the equestrian team and as such, started spending time with the other boyfriends from the team. I remember going to a party and one of them coming up to me to show me a trick he had taught his dog. He was so proud. He looks at the dog and goes "Would you rather be dead or a [insert n-word here]?" and the dog plays dead.

WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU TEACH YOUR DOG THAT AND THEN DO IT IN FRONT OF A STRANGER?

Yellow works for the Pirates. Not as great for the Padres. I can't picture the Angels in yellow, but I am willing to consider it.

stuck in traffic i saw a halo topped angels hat discarded in the shoulder. I almost got out and grabbed it it looked so nice, and they are the only time I actively dislike (because I am from orange county and hate the residents, parents excluded)

I don't have a lot to say about the unis because I'm a Tigers fan and I agree with Craig, so every other team is universally ugly by comparison. That said, I wish the Twins wore their '90s gray pinstripe uniform more often; I grew up watching Kirby Puckett in that uniform so it's what I think of when I think of Twins unis.

But really, today, I'm here for the Hand Saniter Cam, because if not for you Craig, I wouldn't know it existed. My god.

People that are into micromanaging control. I am in a small 3 unit HOA because it's one 3 unit building. Maintenance and water. that's it. It's still hell

We are in a city with no yard. Weeds were growing in three places, the problem dude (who lives in another city but rents his unit out (to much nicer people at 2.5 times my mortgage) yelled at me when I suggested we buy a $30 weed whacker at lowes because their house brand is so bad.

We would use it twice a year at most

I'm the opposite. I can see classics for a few original teams, but especially with the expansion teams, I want every colour in the rainbow. Make them iconic the way Yankee pinstripes are.

Who decided Navy and Red are "classic" colours and teal and pink aren't?

Expand full comment

We’re just not going to agree on the serious issue of jerseys. I despised those cream alternates they were putrid and one of the few marketing decisions Dolan’s made is throwing those in the dust bin of bad Jersey decisions.

If there was video evidence of nearly every corporate golf outing (the ultimate safe white space) I’ve attended over the last two decades, the cancelling of old white male executives could resemble the gatlin gun scene from Josey Wales.

I really prefer the early 90s Angels look, which had the navy caps with Red Bull’s and the interlocking CA that made perfect sense for the name. The only saving grace of all the red they utilize now is that so much red is primarily an NL thing, so the Angels kind of claimed an available scheme in the AL.

Also this revisionist history where people love the Disney pinstripes and winged A is unacceptable.

We, that’s red BILLS.

Re:unis. Can we lose the name on back? Buy a program or check the Jumbotron/video games that are in every ballpark. Road unis should have the name of the home city/place on the front. My 2¢

Expand full comment

Now there is a curmudgeonly view I haven't heard in a while. From a practical (dollars) standpoint you could just sell any number and it will be evergreen--no need to buy another jersey. Unless you have a "famous" number (Griffey's 24, for example) when Oliver Perez leaves your team no one knows were were a OP Mariners stan. "Who? No, no... I'm a big Yohan Ramirez guy."

Expand full comment

You can still sell that stuff. I just like unis without NOB

Expand full comment

Yeah, the name on the back is what sells merch, so you know that is going to stay. From a TV viewer's standpoint, I hate when names are missing from the uniform. I don't know everyone's number by heart - especially on teams I don't see often. Don't want to have to do an internet search to see who's who. Can't consult the program or jumbotron from home. There are enough bad broadcasters out there that are too busy with their irrelevant stories to bother telling you who & what is happening on the field.

no, never lose the name on the back, It makes watching teams more enjoyable. You can't expect casual fans to learn 750 players

I loved Cleveland’s cream unis. It was really the only time I’ve felt strongly about a uni. But, as noted already in the comments, I was in the minority.

I've decided they should change their name to Spiders, and the branding going forward should reflect that. Black and yellow? Black and orange? Black and Grey? This? https://earthsky.org/earth/three-amazing-feats-of-spiders

I'm kind of surprised MLB teams haven't jumped on the Premier League bandwagon by changing uniforms annually to promote sales of replica jerseys.
