Huge soft spot for that song, as I was dealing with a teenage crush for the girl who lived directly across the street.

This is the maddest I've been at the Yankees since 2004. They stink, from the top down. And Aaron Boone keeps chugging along, saying nothing in a million words. Brian Cashman remains employed. It's embarrassing as hell.

it's the gas lighting that also insults me.

-- Sanchez will come around as a catcher.

-- Gleyber *can* play SS

-- Hicks will be fine

-- Donaldson is *close*

on and on with 10+ examples of how lost this organization is.

Ca$hman has always been part of the business model but it is far from working anymore. Wholesale change is needed.

I just saw the fan video.

After the game, Boone said the fan is "close to coming around. day to day." said he likes what he sees, that the fan is giving its all, that it's a struggle but the fan will be back to blowing. same as the team, in his opinion.

The Yankees need to clean house after this season. I've gone between being a Cashman defender and indifferent toward him ( and same with Boone, for that matter). But I think the game has passed him by at this point. The front office needs to get younger and smarter or, at the very least, needs a new and different voice. I'm not entirely sure the manager would make a difference in this situation with this poorly constructed roster but I think Boone needs to go all the same. It's just time. The team needs a shakeup in a major way and I'm ready for it.

{Re-upped from a couple of days ago--because I think no-one saw it...please pardon the abuse of self-expression but as a Yankee fan I'm trying not to think about baseball as much lately}

Cruise seems to have had a bit of a renaissance of late, at least in terms of his reputation, from 'weird religious guy' to 'savior of cinema'--which, as a Gen-X film fan, has been a strange thing to see. However, if he wants his public rehabilitation to be complete, he should seriously reconsider optioning my screenplay, should he choose to accept it, for 'Mission: Impossible 9; Golden Era' in which Cruise's Hunt character infiltrates a shady pseudo-religious organization, The Church of Spiritual Technology, which has (inexplicably) attained U.S. Federal tax status as a non-profit religious organization, but in reality is a front for money laundering, mostly as a conduit for shady international capital to acquire U.S. real estate. Cruise must find and save the spouse of one of the higher-ups in the CST, Morris Davige, whose wife has been secreted away because of her willingness to spill the beans on all the CST's illegal practices, which include infiltration and theft from various agencies of the U.S. government. Before Mrs. Davige is killed during the rescue attempt, she passes on information to Cruise that, inadvertently, the CST has acquired priceless kompromat about the U.S. president, which they are willing to sell to the highest bidder. The CST blows Cruise's cover after the failure to save Mrs. Davige, and he becomes the international symbol of all the jack-booted thuggery and overreach of the U.S. covert military apparatus. His only hope to recover the information and rehabilitate his own reputation is to find a way onto the CST's ultra-secure superyacht, the Tradewinds, where they have secured all their most valuable and damaging information on an onboard standalone supercomputer. Your move, Mr. Cruise.

Expand full comment

Thing is, you could make an argument that certain other longstanding religious groups and organizations also do things unbecoming of religious groups. If the Feds were to declare, er, the Church of Spiritual Technology not a religion, who else could they declare not a religion.

Though this is, I think, a big reason those of an anticlerical bent would end all such tax exemptions for religious groups. After all, to the atheist, it's fraud anyway.

Nothing will make an already heat absorbent artificial field even more fun to play on than making it black.

A thought: last winter, the Mets were looking for someone to be a "co-ace." They chose Verlander over Rodon, and after deGrom decided to go to Texas. deGrom had TJ surgery. Rodon was out for three months and has looked awful since returning. And JV, after his own injury issues and a slow start, has been increasing reliable. So for all the agita about signing Verlander, I daresay things don't look so bad now. At least in terms of that contract. Today we will finally see if the Mets got a good pitcher in Quintana, back after his own long rest. (Frankly, while I think the Mets have no chance of making the playoffs, the rotation as currently constructed and performing is pretty good. I start worrying only after the starters leave.)

The Braves are finally in a slump after a year of sustained excellence, and there isn't anyone in position to take advantage of it. Feh.

First place Orioles. Did anyone anywhere predict that?

Expand full comment

While Verlander may look OK compared to deGrom and Rodon, in retrospect that's just saying he's the best (and highest salaried) of 3 poor options. Whether Rodon and deGrom having longer contracts means they have more time to turn it around and make the signing look OK, or it means they have more years of the team throwing money into a black hole, has yet to be seen.

Expand full comment

I was shocked when the Mets signed JV. I sort of expected Rodon, for what @bolweevils2 said about longer contracts. The Mets starting pitching has big names and have had some individually decent performances but overall they have not performed better than middle of the pack.

We don't hit when we pitch well, we don't pitch when we hit well. After the all-star game we had decent pitching and were 3-hit, and then the other day we were up by 8 or something and let the WSox get within a runner on 3rd. These Mets won't make the playoffs, you're right.

I had really been hoping JV would go back to the Tigers. The season would still be a disaster but it would have given the fans something to look forward to.

I’m running out of fire GIFs to describe the Nats’ bullpen. Even worse, I can’t even blame Davey Martinez; I think he is holding his breath and expecting the worst like the rest of us lately. (That said, is his habit of overusing a hot reliever, leading to them breaking down, contributing to the problem? Could be.)

PS Drag him (LaRose), Craig.

PPS Just checking: that SUNY Morrisville field is turf and not just pavement, right? Because THAT would be badass.

this was supposed to be for yesterday, when the talk was announcers, but I was late:

Here's a nugget I just came across while perusing a 1957 SI that had a Dodger's cover:

"The Novice"

"In his first weeks as a radio broadcaster, Phil Rizzuto has made almost as many errors as he did during a full season at SS. He also gives listeners a much more real version of events than the typical broadcaster...

Rizzuto corrects himself with sincerity ... In his first game Mantle hit a ball to left: 'There goes a long drive to deep left' screamed Rizzuto, his voice rising. Washington LFer gathered the ball in a few steps from the warning track.

'Gee, I've gotta learn to judge them better from up here in the booth.' When her called Mantle safe on a bunt before the pitcher turned it into a force at second, Rizzuto said: 'There I go again; me and my big mouth.'

Rizzuto will acquire polish. He'll make fewer mistakes. When that day comes, he won't be as much fun to listen to."

lol fear not.

and my fav Rizzuto call:

in the 9th inning of a scoreless game against the Red Sox before Danny Cater was traded for Sparky Lyle. Rizzuto, unlike Sterling, on radio could build fan excitement while throwing out a caveat, usually with variations on the phrase “that could be trouble.” So Cater hits one down the left-field line and Rizzuto says, "Line drive to deep left, if it stays fair that’s trouble…Stay fair!”

If memory serves, the ball hit the foul pole. In that case, Rizzuto’s rooting was both understandable and fun.

The meds were increased yesterday as the seizures have been about one week apart. He is now on both Gapapentin (400mg 2X day) and KBpro (potassium bromide 4x! a day). The meds have not altered his mood nor his gait and he seems himself day to day.

Craig, re: your current Rush stance and middle age, I find the lyric “either I’m too sensitive or else I’m gettin’ soft” often applies to me.

My theory is Rush used to just annoy him back in the day. But now it also reminds him of the old days hanging around with his brother riding around in a '79 Buick LeSabre, so the sentimentality overcomes a lot of the annoyance.

Huh … Eastern Michigan has a gray/grey surface, I wonder if the issue of the heat ever came up. The sacrifices made for recruiting purposes 🤷🏼‍♀️

I wonder if the Yankees are just gonna ride this season out and completely overhaul the franchise, or if they have taken on the mentality of most American sports ownership and if they’re making bank, who cares what’s going on in the standings? I do love the parity in the AL East right now.

Cleveland’s baseball club once sold opposing apparel at their team shop one season, and yes it’s a bit insulting to the players, but I’m more insulted as a fan at the MS Paint-level designing. All MLB gear is a general design, just switched up by team logo & colors. A shirsey is a shirsey I suppose, but I’m grateful to live in the land of independent sports fan merch.

I have loved Rush for more than 40 years. I've never been a lyric-driven listener, but I very much like certain kinds of loud noise. And yes, I wasted far too much time trying to persuade people a) to like the music that I like, and b) to not like the music I don't like. But 30+ years of marriage to someone with entirely different musical tastes has knocked the edges off that. That and growing up a bit.

Anyway, if you only listen to one Rush song tomorrow, don't listen to a Rush song, listen to Geddy Lee talking about the Holocaust.

so my favorite substacker runs a section on my favorite band? This is the best Thursday ever. I'm still a huge Rush fan. No apologies for that, I just love the music. I'll not criticize anyone for any takes on Rush. These 3 guys were awesome and gave us such a gift especially in their last album Clockwork Angels which is an understated gem. The central idea of Clockwork Angels has since been turned into a trilogy of great books/graphic novels by Kevin J Anderson. Rush encourages deep dives into their music and lyrics and I couldn't love that more. The camera eye (and it's NYC/London themed music video) is a particular favorite. Rush on my friends. A good middle age white guy day for me is any day with baseball, Rush and some other great TV shows/rock music... I'm set.

Yankees, man, what are they doing. It's like they are making it just fine to be mediocre. It's the Yankees. They have different standards than all other teams, except now they don't. Surprising. Maybe it's indeed time for the Mets to retake the City like back in '86. Well, maybe next year.

I have seen Rush six times:

in 1983 (when I was 12)

in 1986

in 1990 (Feb)

in 1990 (May)

in 1996

in 2004 (was the show in Frankfurt that became the R30 live album)

I’m a big fan and always have been thanks to my exposure during my formative years. The Ayn Rand themes Peart wrote about in the 70s leave me cold but the fact they are good guys and Geddy is a big baseball guy is an added bonus. My top five favorite Rush albums:

Signals

Power Windows

Moving Pictures

Permanent Waves

2112

the "big 3" of Moving Pictures, Signals and Perm. Waves - unabashed favorites. I have a soft spot for Presto since that's when I officially onboarded myself as a Rush Fan, and Roll The Bones came out while I was in college. The rest of them I can listen to whenever. I actually also really like the original '74 "Rush" album with Rutsey on Drums as that was a completely different sound and it's just a fun take on what if Peart never joined Rush.

Agree on the debut. Just good hard rock and I feel like Working Man is in their all-time top 5. And your take on Clockwork Angels is a good one

Fly By Night is also a great bridge album as it features some stuff that sounds like the first album and then the transition to Peart written stuff. Some of the more proggier mid 70's stuff I can take or leave, although i do love 2112 as most rush fans do! And the 90's "hard rock" stuff is just fine, the stuff from Counterparts/Test for Echo thru Snakes and Arrows - all just fine, none personal favorites, but enjoyable stuff. We are all blessed we got 20 great albums from them before we lost Neil. Still hopeful Geddy and Alex continue on in some form, but enjoying their side work now and the Rush beer and related stuff is a lot of fun.

The Pads have won two in a row and I don’t know what to do with that. I certainly never expected a 2-0 win to somehow be tied to Rush but here we are.

I am of an age at which when I was in school, we covered our books with brown paper bags, which inevitably led to drawing and doodling on them. I recall it was cool to draw the names and logos of bands on the book covers, often mimicking an album cover or something like that. Lots of guys (it was always guys) would draw Rush on their covers with these sort of blocky letters. (I drew baseball logos. Go figure.) I was not a rock guy - I was a New Wave guy - so I thought their drawings were dumb and that led to a true hatred of Rush.

I don’t hate Rush anymore - I don’t care for their music, but enough people do, so I assume they’re pretty good, if not for me - but now I want to go make book covers and draw on them.
