I've done summer work in college at a field station (less remote than you, but still dirt roads and not close to major cities) with a vehicle that had a clamp replacing the crank to roll the window up and down. Looked weird but worked great!
My current vehicle has a broken driver's side power window so it won't roll down. I was asked if I was getting it fixed and said no, I'm not spending money to disassemble the door and fix a minor inconvenience (oh noes, I can't go through a drive thru window) when I'm currently looking at replacing the thing because it's 16 years old and creaky. As long as the window is stuck CLOSED I can work around it just fine.
2006 Dodge Tradesman. 140,000 miles, diesel. Power NOTHING. I love my Welfare Windows, as my kids call them, plastic floorboards and AM\FM radio. I found a rotary dial phone on Amazon. They'll freak out.
Back in the broke-ass days of my early punk rock touring years, we learned a lot about the MacGuyver-style fixing of used vehicles and how it was ALWAYS better to not have power windows or really power anything whenever possible. I still feel that way, but time has marched on and now there's a Prius wagon in the driveway, so... yeah, that happened. Anyway a smart thermostat seems like more of an annoyance than a luxury to me.
Friendly aside, I live somewhere where my car windows regularly freeze shut in the winter. I still go through drive-thrus and just open my door instead, but your results may vary depending on how long your arms are (or maybe you don't care this much to use drive-thrus, lol)
Oh I totally do that when I visit an ATM. But I have to admit, I don't feel bad about cutting out stuff like McDonald's when I was driving along the road, tried the window (when it still worked some of the time), and it was stuck up so I just kept driving. My wallet and waistline are probably both better off!
Tatis Jr. is going to be in SOOO much trouble with his superiors. You know that they told him again and again, if we let you do this Earth assignment, you must NOT reveal your powers. And what does he go and do?
I think you make a good point -- these baseball writers just want to keep their coverage professional and clean. They just want to promote a positive image of MLB and the players. Positive coverage fosters cooperation with interview subjects and makes it easier for reporters to do their jobs.
Ugly off-field stories like the Bauer situation are avoided by reporters unless they broke the story and have exclusive access. Otherwise it's best for reporters to avoid it like the plague.
Now, to be fair -- Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times wrote a scathing article after the Bauer news broke rebuking the Dodgers decision makers for signing Bauer:
"The narrative that Trevor Bauer was some sort of Baseball Counter Culture Hero was shoved at us, left and right. The limp willed jerks who ran those platforms have now got to figure out how to spin this current iteration of Trever Bauer because the superficial facts of him as a person which were ignored in favour of a framing that made him seem better than he actually was, have come out in the open."
This. And also thanks to Craig for providing a safe space for Ruth to post in. Given the backlash she describes (and the sort of backlash I've seen to similar posts elseweb), this is no small thing.
Boy, you are up early, says the other guy who is up early.
Tylor Megill only went five innings, but only gave up one run and two hits. His presence might help stabilize the rotation. And fair to say that getting Nimmo back has really helped the offense.
I wouldn't say that DC has forgotten Donner. In fact, Patty Jenkins said that she was doing an homage to Superman with things she did in WW84. A film that I enjoyed but that was generally disliked. I don't know how much audiences want that sort of earnest superheroics when everyone seems to be trying out for the Tony Snark Quipping Award. Personally, though, I love that, and you really can't do Superman any other way (which I think everyone who's made a Superman TV show or film since Donner except Snyder gets).
Once again, Ruth knocks it out of the park. Not only should the Dodgers suspend Bauer, he should be released. Sure, he gets his money, but he also goes away. He's radioactive and he's an asshole. The truth of what happened will probably not be known. But there is enough know to absolutely certainty that this guy has lost the privilege of walking about free among us, pounding his chest just because he can toss a baseball harder than most of the human race. Which he's apparently not a part of anyway.
One last thing she'd like you to know. She's a fellow Canadian. Montreal, Quebec born and raised, not a word of English until she was 15 and moved to USA.
Absolutely. Like she never left. In France, two years ago, she got the "Oh, you must be Canadian" when speaking to locals. They weren't mean, just matter of fact. Apparently there's a Canadian accent to her French. LOL
Also, for all of you Charlie Bronson fans out there, X-15 from 1961 is a Richard Donner classic. Interestingly, also features Mary Tyler Moore in her first film role.
Ruth, thank you for the guest post. I am sorry that you have been made into the target of harassers and trolls for bringing logic to the discussion.
I wish you the best and wish for a fairytale land where survivors of sexual abuse and IPV didn’t have to face such a barrage of reports of it that are uncritically reported in our media outlets.
I would also say, just as a general comment, that consent is affirmative and can be withdrawn at anytime so, in my mind, asking for something at one point in time is not carte blanche. Not to go all sex educator in your comments Craig but it is one aspect of the story (THE TEXTS SAY THIS) that has been bothering me.
The Dodgers have long been my secondary team but I think I will jump on the Padres bandwagon.
I can’t believe you mentioned the Castellanos HR without realizing he did it AGAIN, this time interrupting a eulogy for a long-time Royals employee. And incredibly he hit it in the exact same spot of the exact same road ballpark.
Also, someone pointed out that Castellanos hit his first career professional HR (in the minors) on the same day that Osama bin Laden was killed. I wonder if the radio broadcast was notified during that AB.
Today's lesson was on perspective, ladies and gents, and a much needed lesson at that. Ruth, what a fantastic post. To all those boys slinging arrows on twitter, hiding behind your snarky, not so clever pseudonyms: grow up, apologize, and learn from this. You embarrass us all.
I was struggling a bit with how to balance the amusement of the thermostat rant and absorbing the power of Ruth's post. Then she did it with five simple words. So I'll keep it as simple as I can: thank you and please keep doing what you do.
JD Vance is going to be mentioned in every newsletter from now on, isn't he?
Craig is going to make it his mission to do anything he can to derail Vance's political career. He knows he has presidential potential and ambition. He has a wealthy benefactor in Peter Thiel. He's building connections.
Most importantly, Vance has a strong myth -- he's a self-made hillbilly. You've got to have a strong myth if you're going to have a cult of personality.
Examples of a strong myth: Trump being a great, competent businessman. Obama representing hope and change. Bush jr being a compassionate born-again christian -- my gawd, were they wrong about that one. Bubba being viewed as a black man.
Bush sr really was a war hero, though -- did you know he almost got eaten by Japenese soldiers? Holy crap.
Thank you.
The Thin Dodger Blue Line, man. One hell of a thing.

This is so well said. And thank you.

This is so good, cur.
Thank you 🙏

Insomnia CDT for me.

Ruth, my wife read your post just now. She was moved to tears. She said bravest thing she ever read.
Oh wow. Please thank her for me, and then give her a hug.
One last thing she'd like you to know. She's a fellow Canadian. Montreal, Quebec born and raised, not a word of English until she was 15 and moved to USA.
I hope she’s retained her French. It’s so good to have more than one language.
Absolutely. Like she never left. In France, two years ago, she got the "Oh, you must be Canadian" when speaking to locals. They weren't mean, just matter of fact. Apparently there's a Canadian accent to her French. LOL

Three (and) Four Musketeers just getting ignored here. IMO his best.
Ruth speaks the truth. Glad to read and always glad to see a challenge to Passan.

The Twitterati are having a blast with this.
And how!

Don't get me wrong, I liked your thermostat content fine. But almost any complaint seems petty after Ruth's tour de force.
There’s always room for both 🙏
