Craigster, thanks to my frequent visits to the Cormac McCarthy archives just down the road from Boerne at San Marcos, I seem to recall a place called the Boerne Pie Factory or some such thing. It was in the village, near the interstate. Great pies and pastries. On the out chance you didn't know about it, check it out.
Poor Mets fan here. This is a bummer but I think the Mets are doing the right thing by not giving him a 5 year monster contract. Steve Cohen has deep pockets but everyone has some sort of budget to stick to. They won a ton of games in the regular season without him and he was not a shut down starter in big games at the end of the year either. Plus they have to keep some money to the side to pay Bonilla 😀
Impartial observer here, and yes. The Rangers seem much more likely to regret this turn of events than the Mets do. Still, it sucks losing a homegrown superstar like that.
However, I must add that it would be the most Mets thing ever for DeGrom to go out and give the Rangers like 900 innings of 150 ERA+ pitching over these five years.
In much more minor news, the Nats outrighted a couple guys yesterday, Yasel Antuna and Josh Palacios, to clear some room on the 40 man in advance of the rule V draft.
In the story about it in WaPo, beat writer Jesse Dougherty dropped this nugget:
"Palacios spent August and September with Washington, though was often left on the bench behind César Hernández, who went from underperforming as the team’s everyday second baseman to underperforming in left while blocking young players."
I never believed he'd actually sign with the Braves - we haven't signed a top-flight FA pitcher since Maddux, and AA doesn't tend to shell out for pitching.... But I'm glad deGrom is out of the NL East.
Obviously the Rangers are hoping for the Verlander/Scherzer career arc here, but neither of them were given five years. I’d be very uneasy if I was a Rangers fan, but I’d be positively suicidal if I was a Mets fan.
Great for Jake. He got a five year deal when it looked like injuries would derail his ability to get the contract that he otherwise had earned.
Good for the Mets. No way I'd give a pitcher with his *recent* injury experience, age, and mechanics five years at $40 million per.
LOL Rangers. This is what happens when badly run franchises try to jump into the pool and make a splash. They throw around money unwisely, as Mets fans know from the era of Wilpon sans Doubleday. I would rather pay Bobby Bonilla into 2036 than pay Jake $40 million in 2027.
Sad but not surprised. The Rangers visit Citi Field in July, I believe.
There should be no hate towards deGrom for signing a 5 year deal (6 with an option) when nobody would have expected more than 3. The Rangers are hoping there are a lot of innings left in his arm, and deGrom would be foolish to leave those years on the table. As I understand the Mets weren't given the opportunity to counter, but also not given the opportunity to have any counter declined. deGrom made the right choice for himself, and I'll root for him from afar.
I’m sure Nolan Ryan has several home spun tips and cures that will keep Jake healthy. Of course, it hasn’t worked with anyone else but there’s got to be a first time.
I hope deGrom flourishes but the Rangers better sell as many of those jerseys as they can before opening day.
I’m sad that he’s gone and we were lucky to have him, but I am also ok with him moving on. I certainly don’t blame him. For the Mets, it may be better to spend that money on a couple of younger pitchers from a group including Taillion, Rodon, Bassitt, Walker, and Senga. Jake’s last three seasons with the Mets pretty much added up to one great season and the brilliance of the three seasons prior to that seems to have taken a toll on his arm. Maybe he can be great without having to throw 98 mph, but I’m not sure I would invest heavily in that possibility.
If you want a laugh, go look up Evan Roberts on Twitter and peep his deGrom tweets from last night. Those poor Mets fans
The Mets left WFAN in 2013, and it left my car stereo soon after.

OG, affirmative. It's the Tootie Pie Company and oh boy, they've got it going on:

Craig, if you visit during the summer, there are icebox pies like lemon and peanut butter. There is no off-season at Tootie.

As a fellow poor Mets fan, agree 100%

Likewise. The Mets have done decently without him over the past few seasons, and they have Sherzer. They'll be fine.

I'm always here for snark from the beats...

Interesting times down here in Rangers-land. It's too bad for the team that they are, at best, the 4th most popular sports thing here.
NYPost headline: Even the mistakes are bigger in Texas.
Coming next October: Dog Fister; Pitcher Witch
starring Ryan Reynolds as 'Doug'
The modern credit for the Rangers staff would be:
Jacob deGrom. Martin Perez. Jon Gray. With Jake Odorizzi. And Dane Dunning.
And Dane Dunning as Himself
Sad for us Mets fans, but not surprising. At least he went far away from the NL East so he shouldn't haunt us too often.
I was really hoping you wouldn't do this, because I did not want to have to read it again. What a gut punch. I wish him well, though.
