They've got their hands full right now, with one hand on their remote, and the other elsewhere, searching for the next Braves telecast, hoping Juan Soto gets drilled for pimping his homer in the 9th.

Jeff Passan objects to your idea that MLB make public statements instead of whispering them to Jeff Passan.

More seriously, the fact that they didn't make the plan for players to return after 10 to 14 days regardless of test results public just makes it look like they were trying to hide something, even though it was legit. When you have something that sounds bad but really isn't, explain it, don't keep it secret which makes it look even more suspicious.

Would like to see the viewership numbers for the 1st three weekends in Aug of 2019 to compare. Even in a normal year people’s TV habits are vastly different in April than Aug, seems like a apples/Buick’s comparison.

I wonder how many businesses/employees around the country are dealing with the exact same stuff the Indians are dealing with, employees who aren’t taking the virus seriously and jeopardizing others. I had an employee who was surprised to find out that nobody really wanted to work with him after his weekend trip to Disney World. Two America’s man.

Great update. This is definitely worth 27 cents a day. Hell, it may even be worth more. (I was listening to Weezer's Green Album when I got to Anna's insult and I chuckled because she's right. I have been a fan of Weezer's since the 90s, and I can't tell any of them apart either. Rivers Cuomo wears glasses so it helps.)

The green album is excellent. Heck... blue, green and Pinkerton are all excellent!

I'm impressed Anna knows who Weezer is, but my real question, despite the snark, is does she actually love them?

We got my gf's Post Malone/ Ariana Grande loving son into Pinkerton so maybe there's still hope for today's youth. /s

Her brother likes them a fair deal -- he also likes Radiohead and Blur; he's a 90s kid somehow?. She's aware but is in to other things. Anna like the Smiths, Harry Styles, 100 gecs, The 1975, and other things.

My son is 24 now and when he was 20, he accompanied me to see Weezer (or more probably, the other way round). Rare when a 60 year old and 24 year old share the same favorite band.

Got my kids to start listening to Weezer after they enjoyed their version of "Lost in the Woods" from Frozen 2. So another +1 for hope...

Now I'm wondering how many albums have "colorful" names. Blue, Green, and White are all covered....

Expand full comment

They did a Red album as well. I can't think of any other color themed ones.

Expand full comment

They also have Teal (covers) and Black.

Expand full comment

Weezer has a total of 13 albums, 6 of which are colored theme: Blue, Green, White, Red, Teal, and Black. I saw them live in 2016 and they were fantastic. Remember live music? I miss live music.

Do you mean, how many have coloful references? Like "Back in Black"? Or, how many just have a color as a name?

I also like Post Malone/Ariana Grande. There is hope for old folks too.

I love Weezer, but Pinkerton? No. There was an SNL skit on this, by the way, and I was firmly with the No on Pinkerton side. If El Scorcho is the best song on that album, I can't imagine how bad the rest of it must be.

Expand full comment

I'm cracking up because we're about to sound exactly like that SNL skit ("Who the hell is ride or die for Weezer?" "No offense, but burn in hell!") Pinkerton is great. That freaking Teal covers album was an abomination. Toto's Africa sucked in 1982, and it sucked in 2019 when Weezer did it, and don't get me started on their cover of TLC's No Scrubs. Left Eye bitch-slapped Rivers Cuomo from the grave. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab5WvwfLuLM

Expand full comment

That skit is so great. Pink Triangle is terrible, too, for the record. Their version of Africa is fine. It is very true to the original, for whatever that is worth. It was probably their best song since Hurley, although that Hero song that just came out is pretty good. We have and love all the albums from Blue through Hurley (except Pinkerton, of course), after that, they suddenly forgot how to write a song. A bunch of them just sounded like they were reading their grocery lists.

Expand full comment

El Scorcho is not the best song on Pinkerton. Probably Pink Triangle is, but it's hard to rank them. The album is brilliant.

IMO "The Good Life" is catchier than anything on the Blue Album. I still think Pinkerton is the Wowee Zowee of Weezer albums.

As for the Harvard Med School article you cited, here's exactly what it says, "Most people with coronavirus who have symptoms will no longer be contagious by 10 days after symptoms resolve. People who test positive for the virus but never develop symptoms over the following 10 days after testing are probably no longer contagious, but again there are documented exceptions. So some experts are still recommending 14 days of isolation."

Glad you are back and have not misplaced your wit. TV ratings being up is nice, but how is the blackout on MLB. tv necessary given that attendance is impossible. Already pissed that residents of NE Iowa are considered part of the STL, KC, MSP, MKE, and Chicago markets. Really fabulous eay to endear fans. End of rant. Carry on. Hsve a splendid day.

Expand full comment

I'm from NE Iowa but live in Minnesota where we're only blacked out to Twins and Brewers games. My brother, however, lives in Mason City which is just far enough away to not get any Chicago stations like my parents in Decorah. I think he tweets at mlb.tv every single day and has written numerous emails. Getting MLB.TV to lift its blackout restrictions is like his Everest at this point.

Expand full comment

Well, I think the blackout rules are meant to protect the local sports networks that paid big money to have the team's broadcast rights, not to encourage attendance. But to me having multiple teams blacked out unless you're in a city with multiple teams is unfair. Like your example MLB should decide whether NE Iowa is Twins territory or Cards territory or Royals territory or Chisox territory, etc. You can't claim it's more than one city's territory. (Well, I guess they can actually)

There's a Dodger blogger who lives in Honolulu. He's considered to be in all the West Coast markets. I sometimes have access to STL,MKE,CHI on Dish (which I pay extra for), but no access to KC or MSP. Showing the local commercials during the break on MLB.TV instead of the Killebrew graphic should be a solution. I understand if the game is on FOX or ESPN(don't like it, but I get it). 1st world problem...still

The unwritten rules/don't run up the score thing really is bizarre. Does this exist in youth baseball? Does it exist to this kind of pearl-clutching level in other sports?

In other news, Nelson Cruz is a really, really good baseball player.

Expand full comment

I'd argue that it should *only* exist in youth baseball (and other sports).

Given that there aren't millions of dollars and evidence for arbitration cases and the like on the line, and given that massive blowouts tend to come from one team just being head and shoulders better than the other (though that does potentially open the door to Phillies relievers being granted this treatment), a decent youth baseball coach will tone it down, stop kids from stealing, have them take a strike (or stop them from taking a strike, depending on what's going on), don't try to test fielders' arms by aggressively running home, etc..

It won't be anything blatant like telling a kid on third not to run on a passed ball or anything, because that's a whole different kind of demoralizing, but you don't want to ruin a bunch of kids' whole weekend by beating them 28-3

Expand full comment

Unwritten rules exist in the little leagues. This is why my 8 year old son plays soccer now. The coaches regularly embarrassed the boys for not following the "no-fun" rule. I observed in the Little Leagues a sport devoid of joy because adults are involved. We adults ruin everything.

Nelson Cruz is indeed a really good baseball player.

and soccer is fun, but baseball is too, don't the rays have an alternative to little league? THe Giants have "jr. giants" which the boys played in at *****'s age.

Expand full comment

I'm done with Little League. What I observed was grown men inflicting abuse onto a bunch of boys for over a year. The boys were 6 and 7 years old, and they embarrassed the kids until they were crying at a Little League baseball game. It was painful. These were good children who wanted to have fun. I was team mom for a couple of games, and we had fun in the dugout. I don't think the coaches liked it. The adults took the game much too seriously. Even my ex-husband and ex-father-in-law were angered by what we observed. If you want to know why baseball is dying: adults are killing the game.

founding

They do. Both written and unwritten. Even in travel ball, there is typically mercy rules like 10 after 3, 8 after 4. Generally when a team is winning handily, the kids don't steal or advance on all wild pitches. I think they do swing 3-0 because more balls in play mean more chances at outs.

My daughter was listening to a Bowie song and asked if we could go to a concert. I had to break it to her that he had passed away. So now every time a new song comes on that she likes, she asks if they're dead.

Craig, totally agree about Tatis but you left out one thing that would really bring the point home: just one week earlier, your Bravos went into the top of the 9th down 13-1... and proceeded to score 7 runs. I mean, the Padres probably don't have baseball's worst bullpen, but still, a team can be up 7 in the bottom of the 8th and, in the words of Matt Foley, it's worth JACK SQUAT. There's no clock in baseball; innings can go on longer than motivational speeches in your living room.

Expand full comment

I wouldn't say being up 7th in the 8th is worth Jack Squat. It's not a guarantee, but your winning percentage when up 7 is certainly going to to better than when you're up 1, so it's worth something.

Just this weekend the A's went into the 9th down 7-2. The Giants scored their 7th run in the bottom of the 8th. The A's won the game 8-7 in 10 innings, so I'm guessing the Giants wish they had scored a couple more earlier in the game.

I used to play MVP Baseball 2003, and I would always trade for him because his overall rating was less than his actual game performance. He would always end up going, like, 18-3 in 180 innings with 200 Ks and a 1.90 ERA.

Made me a fan for life :)

The Rangers still had 6 outs and trailed by 7. And the Padres bullpen isn’t special so far this year. This whole controversy is a joke. Can’t wait to see the Padres give their best hitter an unscheduled “day off” today and then work real hard to explain why they did it.

That would be the most Padres thing ever. Jayce "I got the job because I work cheap and am buddies with the GM" Tingler should definitely back his player.
