As someone who annually re-reads the book of collected essays by A. Bartlett Giamatti just before opening day (he being the greatest MLB commissioner ever - albeit for too far short a time - and among the most eloquent writers to ever delve in to the deeper rhythms, meanings and moods of this great game), I've never been a bigger fan of yours, Craig, than today.

Everything from "I love baseball for its lazy, comfortable rhythm..." on down (while you were discussing the "unpopular opinion" which I mostly agree with) truly captures why so many of us love this sport, even if we hate those who run the business of said sport currently. The broader point you make - about the postseason being diluted slowly, and the way it lessens the full schedule's importance - is all true. But what sang to me more so was the paean to the spirit of baseball, the game on the radio as you watch the days go from short to long to short again, how the lengthy season can be a simple soundtrack to your summer - with you when you want it, but not so ever-present as to insist on your attention always.

The things that make me love the game are subtleties like the 5th starter taking his turn and hoping he pitches well enough to stick in the rotation a bit longer; your team's beloved role player becoming a star while subbing for the injured regular; the weekday evenings at the park with old friends, catching up on life in between innings, sharing a beer and a hot dog and a few laughs, pausing mid-sentence when the crack of the bat is so loud you just *know* the exciting play is happening..... or simply curling up in bed with the windows open at night for a breeze, watching your team play the late game on the west coast, falling asleep to the sound of your favorite tv booth (GaryKeithAndRon) as the outs roll by slowly. And while the postseason has it's own unique positives, the full slate of 162 is where the true joy lies - at least for me.

All that being said, anytime someone offers up a few paragraphs that make me feel like Bart Giamatti wrote them, it's a good moment. So thank you for that.

The entire Delmonico thing went over my head until I saw your spelled stakes wrong. Even then, it wasn't until I saw A-1 in the next line that I finally put it together.
